Joint Policy Action Support Grant:
ZMK300,000,000 for an implementation period of 7 Months awarded in May, 2012.
Name of Joint Policy Action: Working Towards Improved Access to Justice For The Poor And Vulnerable In Zambia.
PAN's goal with this joint action is to lobby and advocate for the formulation of the Legal Aid Policy in Zambia.
Access to Justice for all, especially the poor and vulnerable, women and children, remains a major obstacle in the Zambian Justice system. More than 60 % of the population live below the poverty line and can simply not afford to proceed legal claims in any of the courts of Zambia. Apart from that, most people have little or no confidence in the justice system. The Government of Zambia has introduced a Legal Aid Act which establishes the Legal Aid Board, mandated with the provision of legal aid services to the above mentioned beneficiaries. However, due to insufficient funding and lack of human resources, there are serious gaps in the provision of legal aid. |

Joint Policy Action Support Grant:
ZMK300, 000,000 for an implementation period of 12 Months awarded in January, 2012.
Name of Joint Policy Action: Enhancing policy support to protect communities from displacements in mining areas of Mansa and Chiengi districts.
MDLA’s goal with this joint action is to advocate for proper mechanisms, strategies and by-laws in the operations of mining in Luapula.
There has been rampant increase in mining activities in Luapula Province, particularly in Chief Chimese in Mansa and in Chiefs Puta and Mununga of Chiengi district. A number of local and foreign investors have set up mines in various villages in the districts, which have caused a lot of damage, such as land degradation and deep pits that have become dangerous to the communities. |

In collaboration with Lusaka District Land Alliance and Zambia Alliance of Women.
Joint Policy Action Support Grant:
ZMK 299,042,580 for duration of 8 Months, awarded in January, 2012.
Name of the Joint Policy Action is: Evidence-based policy advocacy around large- scale land acquisition.
ZLA’s goal with this initiative is to revive the process of addressing land policy issues in Zambia through the use of evidence- based advocacy relating to large- scale land acquisitions.
There is growing prevalence of large-scale land acquisitions whereby foreign investors acquire large amounts of farmland, particularly above 1,000 hectares and as high as several hundreds of thousands of hectares. This threatens local people’s rights. The poor in Zambia are faced with land loss and displacement from their land as it is allocated to new investment and development projects. This vulnerability derives from a history of inadequate land policies that have resulted in insecurity of tenure. |

Joint Action Policy Support Grant: ZMK 257,945,000.00 for 8 Months, awarded in January, 2012
Name of the Joint Policy Action: Campaign for the abolition of death penalty in Zambia.
PFF’s goal with this Joint Action is to secure the abolition of the death penalty in the statutes of Zambia.
The death penalty is still part of the laws of Zambia despite the criminal justice system, having apparent inadequacies. At present, the prospect is to place a moratorium on capital punishment and death penalty. This coalition would like for the law to instead commute the prison sentences of individuals who are on death row to life imprisonment without possibility of parole. Their strategy for this Joint Action is to target among others the Technical committee charged with the responsibility of looking at the Zambian Constitution.
