Turning waste into sustainable opportunities

To combat the negative consequences of climate change and support impoverished communities in peri-urban Lusaka, a group of NGO employees, ‘wastepreneurs’ and solar energy experts developed a low-cost method to collect and turn food waste into organic compost.

In December 2021, the team started collecting food waste from various locations in Lusaka and turning the food waste into organic compost. Later, they hired individuals who lived off day labor jobs or collected plastic bottles and sold them to recycling companies to earn a living. As part of their commitment to reducing emissions, the team only uses human-powered transport, such as wheelbarrows, hand carts and bicycle trailers. Zamkanda is a member of a global initiative, the Gigatonne Challenge, a radically decentralized global climate strategy with teams contributing to reducing carbon emissions across the globe.

Addressing social and environmental challenges through sustainable solutions

In October 2017, ZGF took a significant step forward in its commitment to making a positive impact by establishing Chuluka Limited, a subsidiary company. As a social enterprise operating under the umbrella of the Zambian Governance Foundation, Chuluka is dedicated to addressing social and environmental challenges by offering affordable, reliable, and sustainable solutions through a financially sustainable business model. Its focus areas span across energy, agriculture, the environment, governance, and ICT. Since its inception in 2017, Chuluka has harnessed two primary mechanisms to achieve its mission. Firstly, it develops and offers products that enhance the quality of life for Zambians, ensuring accessibility and affordability. Secondly, it provides services to organisations, helping them function more effectively and efficiently in their pursuit of positive change. The social enterprise builds upon the existing work of ZGF, embodying the same values and aligning closely with our overarching mission.

The guiding principle of Chuluka is the conviction that sustainable and economically sound methods can effectively address social and environmental challenges. By leveraging expertise and experience, we strive to create lasting impact and contribute to the well-being of communities in Zambia. Through Chuluka, we aim to foster a better future by delivering innovative solutions and services that meet the needs of our society while ensuring financial sustainability.
